How to fix a PDF that won't open

A PDF that throws an error usually isn't lost — it's just structurally broken. Repair often fixes it.

Why PDFs break

A PDF ends with a cross-reference table — an index of where every object lives in the file. If that table is wrong (a common result of an interrupted save, a buggy exporter, or a truncated upload), a reader can’t find the pages and reports the file as damaged, even though the actual content is still inside.

What Repair does

Pditor loads the file with a tolerant parser, walks the objects it can find, and rebuilds the cross-reference table from scratch. It also corrects stale stream lengths and skips malformed objects that would otherwise halt opening. The result is a structurally clean PDF that standard readers accept.

When repair can’t help

Repair fixes structure, not missing bytes. If a download or transfer was cut off and part of the file is genuinely gone, that content can’t be recovered — try re-downloading the original. But for the far more common case of a whole-but-broken file, repair usually gets it opening again in seconds, and your file auto-deletes within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my PDF open?
Usually the file's internal cross-reference table or object streams are corrupt — from an interrupted download, a failed export, or a truncated upload. The content is often intact; the index pointing at it is broken.
Can a corrupt PDF be repaired?
Often yes. Repair rebuilds the cross-reference table and fixes stream-length and object errors, which resolves most "damaged" or "cannot be opened" messages. Content lost to truncation can't be recovered, but structural damage usually can.
Will repairing change my content?
No. Repair fixes the file's structure, not its pages — text, images, and layout stay as they were.
My file was only half-downloaded. Can you fix it?
If bytes are genuinely missing, no tool can invent them. But a file that downloaded fully and merely has a broken index will usually repair cleanly.
