The difference between a useful conversion and a useless one is structure. A naive converter reads characters left-to-right and pastes them as one giant paragraph — technically “editable,” practically a mess. A good one figures out where paragraphs break, which lines are headings, and where a table’s rows and columns are, then rebuilds those in the .docx.

If your PDF is a scan
Scanned PDFs have no text layer — they’re images. Converting them directly gives you a document with pictures of words and nothing to edit. Run OCR first to recover the text, then convert to Word.
The honest limit
No converter is perfect on pixel-precise designed layouts (magazine spreads, complex forms). For ordinary documents — contracts, reports, letters, articles — the reconstruction is clean and saves you retyping. For the hardest layouts, expect a few minutes of touch-up rather than a flawless one-click result.
